… The notion of zombies didn’t necessarily exist in the mainstream of John Wesley’s world. He famously believed that his old house had been haunted by a ghost with my first name. I’m sure there were many other supernatural beliefs among the people of his day that I haven’t yet appreciated. But I know that what he describes in this sermon is something akin to zombies: walking cadavers that move and make noise, but they aren’t really alive. That is the state into which we are born, the state out of which we must be saved.
